- Tulum an adorable little town, the main drag is only partially catered to tourists. There are so few towns in the eastern Mayan Peninsula (literally four) that towns like Tulum are more for locals than outsiders. When you leave the main strip and get into the side streets - that is when you see the real Mayan way of life. Children were especially fond of playing with us. During our stay, we watched a local soccer match, attended a HUGE religious gathering (we were the only whites among hundreds), ate with locals, and must have said the word "hola" a hundred thousand times. Seeing the joy of the families, the children, the couples, and how happy and healthy all the Mayans looked, I began to wonder which of us lived in the "third world". |
